What is a CNC Router?

A CNC router is a computer numerical control cutting machine that uses high-speed rotating cutting tools to carve, engrave, cut and mill sheet materials automatically according to a computer-generated digital toolpath. It replaces manual routing with programmed CNC commands for precise, repeatable machining.

1. Main Working Principle:

Design the drawing/part in CAD software;
Convert the drawing into G-code (CNC machining instructions generated by CAM software);
The CNC controller reads the G-code and drives the spindle and tool to perform X/Y/Z three-axis movements;
The spindle rotates the tool to remove excess material and machine the finished part.

2. Main Structural Components:

Spindle Motor: High-speed motor (common power 800W–7.5KW, air-cooled/water-cooled), used for tool clamping, speed range 8,000–24,000rpm, suitable for fine engraving or thick cutting.
Frame: Cast iron or heavy-duty steel frame, ensuring stability during high-speed cutting.
Drive System: Stepper motor or servo motor + lead screw/linear guide, precisely controlling axis travel.
Control System: DSP offline controller or computer-connected NCStudio/Syntec system, used to run machining programs.
Worktable: Vacuum suction worktable or T-slot fixture, used to firmly hold raw materials.

3. Commonly Processed Materials:

Wood: Solid wood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), plywood, particleboard (most commonly used in woodworking CNC engraving machines)
Plastics: Acrylic, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene terephthalate (ABS), foam board
Soft non-ferrous metals: Aluminum plate, copper plate (medium-power models)
Composite materials: Polyvinyl chloride foam board, MDF

4. Typical Applications

Woodworking Industry: Cabinet door carving, furniture pattern carving, wooden handicrafts, wooden sign cutting;

Advertising Industry: Acrylic signs, logo carving, PVC letter cutting;

Handicraft Processing: Artwork relief carving, small decorative item milling;

Model Making: Architectural models, industrial prototype cutting.

5. Entry-level vs industrial size

Hobby CNC router (Entry-level 1212 model, 6090 model): small workshop & hobby use, small workpiece engraving;

ATC CNC router (Industrial size 1325 model, 1530 model, 2030 model): mass production for panel furniture & advertising factories.
